Call to order
SSC Vice-Chairperson, Teresa Villegas called to order the regular meeting at 5:10 PM in the school library.

Approval of minutes from last meeting
School site council members individually read the September 7th meeting minutes. Teresa Villegas motioned/ Esther Mejia seconded approval of the meeting minutes with corrections.

Information/Discussion Items
- Student representatives report-
*Nathaniel: Since our last meeting, we have had many different events at El Rancho relating to school, sports, and clubs. School events that we had were:
-back to school night, which allowed parents to meet with their child’s teachers to learn what is expected of their child.
-college night in the gym where El Rancho hosted over 25 potential colleges for our fellow peers.
- club fair during lunch which clubs of El Rancho signed up for to make themselves known and encourage students to join them
- homecoming nominations to decide our 2011 homecoming queen and princesses
- weekly pep commission to advertise upcoming events
- and blue crew which has become a huge success at our Friday night football games with our new mascots
*Kristal: Since last month we’ve also had a great outcome with sports at El Rancho. Including:
-a football game vs. Northview which we won
-a football game vs. BG which we won
- a football game vs, montebello which we won
-and a fundraiser for the boys basketball team which was held in the main gym for all students and the citizens of Pico Rivera to come out and watch the Power 106 all-stars VS ERHS teachers and staff with a special performance during half time with celebrity guests Cali Swag District and Audio Push.
*Sidney: Here at El Rancho we have many upcoming events including:
- football games against Fontana on Friday at Fontana
-our first league home game against Santa Fe
- meeting with the U.S secretary of education on the 11th.
- homecoming week, October 24, 2011- October 28, 2011 with our annual Night Pep Rally Thursday October 27, 20011 at 7:00 pm in the main gym which all of you are encouraged to attend
*Jaylenne: All of the events that we have at El Rancho are something that we enjoy putting our time and effort into to make it run smoothly and make our school a better place

- Special Education- Mr. Larrache reported that there was not an accurate count of the number of seniors that went on to college because that information is only kept via a survey and the majority of seniors do not fill it out. Mr. Larrache will be sure that the seniors this year accurately fill out the survey.
- EIA SCE/ EIA LEP Mr. Genis deferred to item 6d in the agenda
- GATE- No report
- Administration- Mr. Genis
- Credit Recovery Program is off the ground. Will need SSC to approve the funding in order to fund the program through EIA/SCE instead of the general fund.
- Offering both 0 period and after school classes of English 11 A/B, math, science and social studies classes
- 2-3 teachers are still receiving training on APEX for students retaking A-G required classes. Each class is about 50-60 hours of computer work.
- 70 students are currently in credit recovery, which is open to 10th-12th graders. Hopefully by 2nd semester it will also be open to 9th graders
- On 10/11/11 ERHS is hosting a town hall meeting beginning at 5:30pm in the practice gym.
- Expecting between 500 and 600 people.
- Arne Duncan, the US Secretary of Education, will be there to speak to the public regarding national education policies.
- One of Mr. Duncan’s aides is a former ERHS grad and encouraged the visit to ERHS and Pico Rivera.
- All SSC members are invited to attend.
- The first session of teen court was on Monday 10/4 at City Hall. Mr. Elias, teen court coordinator, said that there were 132 ERHS students present; from which, two juries of 18 and four court officers were selected.
- The students herd two cases of petty theft from a JC Penny.
- Judges and city officials were very proud of the students
- ERHS teen court is being regarded as a model teen court especially because of the time and resources that were spent creating its infrastructure. The two pre-law classes offered on campus have trained students. The teen court club is also in place to prepare 9th-11th graders in proper court proceedings.
- Once the cases are heard, the jury gives the sentence. Once the defendant completes the sentence, it is expunged from their record.
- The National Merit Scholorship Society awarded Gustavo Marquez, a senior, as being in the top 5% of the nation on the PSAT. Gustavo is currently taking multi-variable calculus.
Separate Action items

- a) School Site Council Timeline-
- Mr. Genis created a calendar for the school year with all meeting dates. A timeline draft will be created for SSC members to be finalized in November. SSC elections will take place in May. Teleparent will be used to notify parents to nominate and the ballot will be sent home for elections.

- b) DATA Presentation
- Mr. Genis asked for this to be tabled to the 11-2-11 meeting

- c) Request for bylaw change
- Mr. David Navarez wrote a letter that was read by Teresa Villegas that asked the SSC to change their meeting dates from the first Wednesday of each month to the first Tuesday of each month in order for classified district employees to be able to attend
- Request was denied by the SSC.
- d) Approve Budget Items
- Mr. Genis reported that EIA/SCE monies could be used school wide, while Title 1 funds must only be used for targeted students, 9th graders with low test scores.
- Mr. Genis asked the SSC to approve funding for the following items:
- Extra Pay for 1 certificated staff member to impliment year long Senior Project
- Esther Mejia motioned to approve and Teresa Villegas seconded. Approved
- Extra pay for 1 certificated staff member to be on duty in the computer lab from 3:15-5:00pm for technology and to assist students with class assignments
- Pat Gomez motioned to approve and Teresa Villegas seconded. Approved
- Extra pay assignments for six certificated teachers to teach after school credit recovery classes.
- Mr. Genis motioned to approve and Teresa Villegas seconded. Approved.
- Extra pay assignment for seven certificated staff members to run the 10th grade counseling program on three Saturdays, 10/15, 10/22 and 10/29 at 10am and 11:30am.
- Amber Hernandez motioned to approve and Pat Gomez seconded. Approved.
- Extra pay assignment for three certificated staff members to hold nine teen court sessions throughout the school year.
- Nathaniel Zaragoza motioned to approve and Pat Gomez seconded. Approved.
- Extra pay assignment for one certificated staff member used to translate at SSC meetings as well as translate the SSC meeting minutes.
- Jaelene Rodriguez motioned to approve and Esther Mejia seconded. Approved.
- Mr. Genis asked for the approval of $13,775 to be spent on 75 student seats and the training of teachers through the APEX learning program. He also asked for the approval of $15,694.25 to pay for 15 students to take multi-variable calculus.
- Kristal Perez motioned to approve and Teresa Villegas seconded. Approved.
Public Comment
- Esther Mejia commented that Ms. Mata was taking her students to the La Mirada Theater to see the Crucible. She is happy to see teachers going above and beyond. Would like to request the help of the Parent Leadership Council to fundraise.
- Teresa Navarro mentioned that the parent leadership council elections for secretary, treasurer and translator are in the office. The parent leadership council is trying to become a PTO. They meet the second Tuesday of every month in A102 at 6pm.
- Mr. Elias reported that the tardy sweeps began and tardies for 1st period are down 50%. Noticed many repeat offenders. Trying to work on reducing the price of the monthly bus to $15/month. There have been 30,000 more riders since adding the two Montebello busses. Trying to create a fundraiser and may need the support of SSC.
- Sarita Mota reported on Mondays from 9-10am in A102 there are arts and crafts being offered by the parent leadership council. Currently they are making flower arrangements out of plastic bottles.
- Teresa Navarro reported that books were donated to the parent leadership council by the district to help parents learn and speak English better.
- Mr. Genis reported that some advanced art students entered the Latino Heritage Month Art Contest. ERHS students took 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
