School Site Council Meeting Minutes 12/3/13

2.         CALL TO ORDER
                        Ms. Kwek called to order the regular meeting at 5:06pm. 

3.         ROLL CALL

5.         INFORMATION DISCUSSION ITEMS
                       

    1.  Student Representative Report

--Fall sports have concluded.  We are proud of our Dons.  Girls Tennis advanced from a wildcard game into CIF 1st round.  Football and Boys Water Polo ended their seasons in the first round of playoffs and Girls Volleyball ended their season in the Del Rio League with a record of 5-2.  The canned food drive took place from 11/4 to 11/15.  It went very well.  The Seniors collected the most with 1,934.83 pounds.  We also had a 4th period class competition in which Ms. Farris’ class won the small class competition with 22.27 pounds, Mr. Sauceda’s class won the medium class competition with 482 pounds and Ms. Carreon’s class won the large class competition with 345.82 pounds.  Their classes will be having a pizza party. 

--We are preparing for Powder Puff.  Practices started on 11/14 and voting for Power Puff court will take place on December 6.  The Power Puff Pep Rally will be on 12/12 in the main gym during lunch and the game between Seniors and Juniors will be on the same day at 7pm in the stadium.  Tickets are $5 for all attendees and we hope you come out to see the action.  The Christmas tree decorating competition will be on December 11th at lunch.  All classes will receive a tree, which they will decorate according to their chosen theme.  Trees will be donated to families in need after the contest. 

--Winter sports are coming and students are ready to cheer on the Dons.  December 16th through January 3rd will be the 3-week long winter break.  Final exams are scheduled to take place January 22nd through January 24th.

    3.  Special Education--Ms. Farris and Ms. Chapman visited Woodbridge High School in Irvine to get information about co-teaching models.  Visit was successful. 
    1.  Administration--Ms. Kwek announced Mr. Rodriguez is now the Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Instruction.  Dr. Ventura-Rincon is the Assistant Principal of Business and Activities.  Foreign exchange students will return to El Rancho (1/21/14 to 2/7/14).  WASC focus group leaders preparing for upcoming visit.  New professional development center at El Rancho to support staff.  Training to be held on 12/4/13 and 12/5/13 to discuss transition to Common Core.  Ms. Farris considers the trainings to be helpful.  Teachers have choice of when to attend meetings.  Feedback from teachers has been positive. 

 

    1. Title I--Ms. Kwek provided SSC with information about Subject Group Leaders working as a professional learning community to help students.  Teachers went to training in November 2013 with Mr. Gonzalez.  More training opportunities to come during 2013/2014 school year.  Questions for upcoming discussions and trainings:  1)What do we want students to learn, 2)How do we know what they have learned, 3)What do we do if they haven’t learned it. 

6.         SEPARATE ACTION ITEMS

    1. Ms. Kwek--Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) final copy has been submitted to district.  There are zero major changes in document.  It will be presented to ERUSD School Board later this month (December 2013).  SPSA changes can be made if needed. 
    2.  Mr. Mark Strayhorn (visitor) asked about purpose and function of School Site Council meetings. 

 

    1. Upcoming WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) Focus Group meetings to be held on 1/17/14 and 2/7/14 at El Rancho HS.

            Next meeting will be held on February 4, 2014 at 5pm in the school library.
