Diversity in Film and Literature English The purpose of Examining Cultural Diversity and Gender through Literature and Film is to provide students with the opportunity to practice and improve their analytical and writing skills through the study of great works of literature and their film adaptations. This course is designed so that students will become proficient in analyzing literature and film and how it has and continues to shape beliefs around race, class, ethnicity, gender and national origin. This is an intensive writing, text-based course aimed at enriching the experience of textual literary study and expository, critical and analytical writing through multiple mediums and genres. Major literary pairings at the core of this course include Alice Walker's The Color Purple, Amy Tan' The Joy Luck Club, Julia Alvarez's In the Time of Butterflies, and Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. The approach to the various films and literary pieces will be interpretive, analytical, comparative, and critical from a cultural, social and historical point of view. Through daily reading, expository writing, daily written and oral reflection on the material, and essay driven assessments, students will demonstrate an understanding of the making and meaning of the literature and films and how they reflect culture, as a unique means of expression.
